Invitation
to representatives of historical Cistercian monasteries in Europe to celebrate the 900th anniversary of Vreta Abbey, Sweden
"Historical monasteries in Östergötland, Sweden."An international conference in Vreta kloster 28 – 30 May 2010
900 years ago
In 2010 we can be certain that the monastery foundation lies 900 years back in time. It was King Inge the Elder who on his own and his queen Helena’s behalf in an undated letter
solemnly proclaimed the birth of the monastery: "Hic Rex Ingo cum sua consorte Regina Helena fundaverunt monasterium Wretam et dederunt ad illud monasterium… / Here King Inge together
with his consort Queen Helena founded the monastery of Vreta and donated to this monastery…". These words cannot have been pronounced later than 1110, since the king died in that year.
Which is why the 900-year anniversary will be celebrated in 2010.
Please see Vreta’s monastic history in mini format!
The anniversary will be celebrated
with concerts and lectures during the whole of 2010. On Sunday 30 May the great festive day will take place.
International conference 28 – 30 May 2010
In connection with the festival on 30 May the abbey’s friendship association "The Friends of the Former Vreta Abbey" invites you take part in a special
programme for monastery enthusiasts from Sweden and other countries on 28-29 May, a conference which culminates in participation in the parish jubilee festival on 30 May.
All monastery friends are welcomed to these three days.
